I must admit, these neon signs used by restaurants are pretty cool.  You may have seen one in front of a restaurant introducing the specials or at a dark bar introducing their recommended beverages.

Yes, these things are eye-catching, and they point out what's on the menu, but in terms of making the food more appetizing?  I am not sure.  These things make me feel like I am scavenging food in an alley in a futuristic city, where the government has been overturned and space aliens are roaming our bars.  The only food that I can imagine in that scenario?  I am sure we all have seen them through our Hollywood productions, which can always be trusted when it comes to space alient and what they may introduce to the humankind.

...but I digress.  This neon technology is very cool, and I wanted to do a little research.

How does it work? These neon marker boards is simply a clear acrylic with a black backing.  There are LEDs off to the side of the board that emit light between the the black backing and the clear acrylic board.  When the unit is turned on, the light is essentially bounces between the black backing and the writing (on the acrylic surface), causing the writing to glow.

The picture above is a little different example without the backing, but the concept is the same.  The entire glass, not just writing, tends to glow though.  Some of the traditional neon marker boards are here:
